Fountain in Soborna Square

Filatov’s Vase – why such a strange name? Until 1936, a cathedral was in this place.

In 1936, the cathedral was blown up to fight religion. When the authorities decided to build a public toilet on the site of the cathedral, a famous ophthalmologist Volodymyr Petrovych Filatov intervened.

The scientist managed to stop this process. As a result of his intercession, flower beds were made and a large fountain with a bowl (vase) in the form of a flower bought at Filatov’s expense was installed on the exact spot where the main altar of the destroyed cathedral was located.

People began to call the fountain Filatov’s Vase.

During the restoration of the temple, the location of the fountain was changed, moving it closer to Preobrazhenska Street.
